Hydrogen, here we come!
12. March 2025Interview with Steven Ulbricht, Head of Project Development at H2APEX
What is your vision for the energy system of the future? What role will hydrogen play in it?
Hydrogen is an indispensable part of the energy transition towards a sustainable, resilient and independent energy infrastructure. And decarbonisation through hydrogen does not stop with energy. Hydrogen is used today as grey hydrogen in many industrial processes, for example in fertiliser production and in refining processes. Here, green hydrogen will replace grey hydrogen.
What contribution does your project make?
In Lubmin, we will build a plant with up to 600 MW in the largest expansion stage. This will enable us to produce up to 60,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually and feed it into the pipelines, so that our green hydrogen can be supplied to the whole of Germany via the hydrogen core network. This will save 600,000 tonnes of CO2 – to put this in perspective, it would enable us to reduce the CO2 footprint of around 600,000 people to zero, or completely decarbonise the city of Düsseldorf.
What does it take to make the project a success?
Courage and action: The hydrogen market is being developed, components and suppliers are still new, financing must be found, and the purchase of hydrogen must be negotiated today, even if uncertainties still exist. We have taken up the cause of making it easy. We have learned a lot from the plant that has been in operation for over three years at our company headquarters in Laage, and we are incorporating this knowledge into our large-scale project in Lubmin.
